Start with jurisdiction and role
Identify where the parties and relevant events are located, the governing agreement, whether a collection agency is involved, and whether the next question belongs to a lawyer, court, sheriff, bailiff, civil enforcement agency, licensed investigator, insolvency professional, or secured creditor.
Do not infer one province's rule from another
Licensing, notices, communication rules, limitation or prescription periods, exemptions, court procedures, complaint routes, and enforcement mechanisms can differ. Federal rules may also matter in specific regulated contexts.
Verify with an official source
Use the responsible provincial or territorial regulator and obtain independent legal advice for a specific file. The CRE's jurisdiction guidance is general information and cannot determine rights, deadlines, remedies, or compliance for an individual matter.
